Global Maritime to provide key engineering and consultancy services to support Muir Mhòr’s floating offshore wind project

Fred. Olsen Seawind Limited and Vattenfall, the ScotWind-winning joint venture partners, have appointed Global Maritime to provide engineering and consultancy services in support of Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm, one of the world’s first commercially viable floating wind projects.

Having been awarded seabed rights in the January 2022 ScotWind auction, the Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm project is being developed on an accelerated programme in order to support the UK Government’s target of generating 5GW from floating offshore wind by 2030. Located 65 km east of Peterhead on the Aberdeenshire coast, the site’s deep-water conditions are well-suited to floating turbine technology.

Global Maritime (GM) will provide engineering and consultancy expertise pertaining to the various nearby ports and logistics options being explored for the execution phase of the project. GM’s scope will cover key aspects of the project such as Wet Storage, Integration & Installation, Mooring & Anchoring concepts, Mooring & IAC Optimisation, Floater Assembly & WTG Marshalling/Integration Processes.

GM will manage the project out of its Glasgow office, enabling a locally based project delivery, and will deliver the scope entirely through its in-house specialist engineering and consultancy, with the project drawing on GM’s multi-discipline teams, including geosciences, marine operations, and engineering & software.

Scott Cruttenden, Director of Business Development for Global Maritime, said: “We’re very pleased to have been appointed by the Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm team and look forward to working together to support the progression of the project. This appointment marks another win in a key strategic market for us, and we are delighted to continue our active role in the development of floating wind.”

Gareth Owen, Principal Naval Architect & Muir Mhòr Project Manager, said: “The Muir Mhòr floating offshore project will allow us to draw on a wide range of our in-house capability, having the ability to reduce interfaces and deliver large complex scopes of work is a key strength of Global Maritime and I am looking forward to working with the Muir Mhòr team during the course of this project”.

David Hinshelwood, Project Director for Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm, said: “Our appointment of Global Maritime is another significant step forward for the Muir Mhòr offshore wind farm project and is a further significant boost to our local supply chain. We look forward to working together and further progressing the project which will deliver tangible benefits for the local and national economy.”
