GreenSeas Trust unveils another bin at Canary Wharf

GreenSeas Trust, a leading marine conservation charity dedicated to reducing plastic waste in our oceans, will unveil its second BinsForGreenSeas bin at Canary Wharf on Tuesday 4th November.

The bin, funded by a grant from the City Bridge Foundation, will be installed beside the iconic Whale on the Wharf, a dramatic 12-metre sculpture made entirely from ocean plastics. To mark the installation of the bin, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Tuesday 4th November at 11:00am at Wood Wharf, led by The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London’s Deputy – Captain John Herriman RNR, who is also the Deputy Lieutenant for the Borough of Tower Hamlets.

The BinsForGreenSeas campaign is a nationwide initiative. More than just bins, these recycling installations located in prominent seaside and riverside locations across the UK serve as daily public reminders of the urgent need to protect our rivers and oceans from plastic waste.

Captain John Herriman DL RN commented: “Plastic pollution poses one of the most significant threats to our oceans and marine ecosystems. Initiatives like BinsForGreenSeas are vital in changing behaviours, raising awareness and inspiring positive action. It is a privilege to be able to support the GreenSeas Trust in its important mission.”

This is the second bin donated to Canary Wharf by the GreenSeas Trust, reflecting the area’s role as the financial capital of London.

Fazilette Khan MBE, Founder Trustee of GreenSeas Trust, said: “Having another BinsForGreenSeas located at Canary Wharf is a testament to the success we are achieving in removing plastic waste from the oceans. Our first bin in this location alone collects approximately 80,000 plastics bottles per year. The bin raises awareness and provides an everyday solution to encourage people to dispose of their litter responsibly. So far, we’ve stopped over a million plastic bottles from reaching the ocean. It’s a huge achievement but we know there’s much more to be done and every bin helps with this mission.”

Since the project launch in 2019, GreenSeas Trust has installed 22 bins in key UK coastal areas including Margate, Cardiff, Tyneside and the Port of Hollyhead. The campaign has prevented over one million bottles entering rivers and the sea. The initiative has expanded globally as well, with three bins unveiled in Qatar at Pearl Island.

GreenSeas Trust is committed to raising awareness, changing behaviour and promoting sustainable living. Every bin installed is a step toward a cleaner, healthier future for our planet.

The charity is also encouraging people to take the GreenSeas Pledge on its website and commit to making simple, everyday changes to reduce their plastic footprint.
