Margate Joins GreenSeas Trust’s BinsForGreenSeas Campaign

Margate, one of the UK’s most iconic seaside towns, is taking a stand against plastic pollution by installing a BinsForGreenSeas unit from the environmental charity GreenSeas Trust.

Positioned near the bustling seafront, the new bin will help reduce litter and encourage both residents and the town’s 3.9 million annual visitors to dispose of waste responsibly. The goal is simple but urgent – to protect Margate’s stunning coastline and marine life from the growing threat of plastic pollution.

To celebrate the launch, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Thursday 8th May 2024 at 1pm, next to the historic Margate Clock Tower. The event will be attended by Cllr Steve Albon, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Coastal Services, and Cllr Jack Packman, Mayor of Margate.

Built in 1889 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, Margate’s Clock Tower is a cherished local landmark and a popular gathering point—making it an ideal location to spotlight marine conservation and inspire community action.

“This installation in Margate marks another step forward in our national campaign to reduce the impact of plastic pollution on marine life,” said Fazilette Khan, MNM, CEnv, IEng, Founder Trustee of GreenSeas Trust. “In 2024 alone, we’ve prevented close to a million plastic bottles from reaching our seas. We’re excited to bring this mission to Margate—a stunning coastal town that values its community, beaches and environment.”

The BinsForGreenSeas campaign is a nationwide initiative that pairs eye-catching design with a powerful environmental message. More than just bins, these installations serve as public reminders of the urgent need to protect our oceans from plastic waste.

Plastic pollution remains a major environmental challenge. Single-use plastics—such as bottles, wrappers, and cigarette butts—are the most commonly found litter on UK beaches. These items degrade into harmful microplastics, which damage ecosystems, threaten wildlife and even enter the human food chain.

GreenSeas Trust is committed to tackling this crisis by raising awareness, driving behaviour change and promoting sustainable living. Every bin installed is a step toward a cleaner, healthier future for the planet.
