OVO and Havenwise have announced the Heat Pump Flex Trial, a winter programme designed to help households cut heating bills, reduce carbon emissions and stay comfortable by using heat pumps more intelligently.
Running October 2025 through March 2026, the trial will explore how flexible, data-driven control of heat pumps can lower costs for customers while supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy grid. The trial will include selected OVO customers with Vaillant or Mitsubishi heat pumps, using Havenwise’s smart-control app and algorithms.
Customers will set their comfort preferences in the Havenwise app. From there, Havenwise will remotely optimise the heat pump to use power at greener, off-peak times, while customers remain in full control of temperature settings.
The trial announcement follows recent news that shows the continued decline in supplies from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) has resulted in the tightest gas supply margins in four years.
That is according to National Gas’ latest Winter Outlook for 2025, which forecasts peak demand, supply capability, and key considerations for the upcoming winter.
OVO’s existing Heat Pump Plus tariff add-on already enables customers with compatible heat pumps to pay just 15p/kWh for electricity used by their heat pump, helping make clean heating more affordable.
Henri Casteleyn, Co-Founder, Havenwise said: “Havenwise exists to make heat pumps better for homeowners: lower bills, easier control, fewer worries. This partnership is the first of its kind and will show what’s possible with heat pumps.”
Chris Watling, Clean Heat Lead, OVO said: “This trial is a chance to show how intelligent heat-pump control can deliver both comfort and cost savings, while supporting a greener grid. With Havenwise onboard, we believe many households will see real benefits without needing to lift a finger.”
