Biffa to acquire Enva’s recycling operations across eight UK sites

Waste management company Biffa has agreed to acquire Enva’s general recycling businesses in England and Scotland, expanding its commercial waste collection and recycling capabilities.

The agreement, announced on 3 November 2026, covers eight operational sites and their associated collection and transport activities. Four facilities are located in Scotland, at Linwood, Newbridge, Glenrothes and Irvine, with a further four in England, at Colwick, Wesley Street, Sunningdale and Whetstone. Together, the businesses handle approximately 800,000 tonnes of material annually, employ more than 600 people and operate a fleet of over 150 vehicles.

The operations provide recycling and waste management services for commercial, industrial and construction and demolition customers. Contracts have been exchanged for an undisclosed sum, with completion expected in December 2026. Until then, the businesses will remain under Enva’s ownership.

Expanding recycling capabilities

The acquisition will strengthen Biffa’s position in the construction and demolition waste sector, adding processing capacity and expanding its collection network across England and Scotland.

Michael Topham, Chief Executive Officer of Biffa, said:
“This acquisition is a strong strategic fit for Biffa and our long-term ambitions. It further expands our existing capability to recover and recycle materials the construction and demolition sector generates, as well as enhancing our commercial collections business. We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues and customers, and to building on the strong foundations already in place.”

For Enva, the sale represents a further step in its strategic refocus, following the disposal of its wood business to Seras Energy in September 2026. Following completion, Enva intends to concentrate investment on its remaining resource recovery and environmental services operations across the UK and Ireland, including hazardous waste, batteries, electrical waste, plastics, organics and industrial services.

Roger McDermott, Chief Executive Officer of Enva, said:
“This agreement marks an important step for Enva and our general recycling colleagues in Scotland and England. Biffa is a highly respected business with a strong track record of operational excellence and customer service, and we are confident our colleagues and customers will benefit from joining the Biffa organisation.
“Completion will conclude our strategic refocus and provide a clear platform for further investment and growth across our continuing businesses.”

Both companies will work together during the transition, with the transaction expected to conclude before the end of the year.
